Colours for school shorts

We stock school shorts in grey, navy blue, khaki and black — the colours that dominate school bottom wear in Kenya. Grey is the most common for primary schools, khaki is popular in coastal and warmer counties, and navy and black are used by many private and international schools. Our school shorts match the colours of our school trousers, so you can mix and match.

When are school shorts worn?

Many Kenyan primary schools let boys wear school shorts from pre-primary to Grade 3 or 4, then switch to trousers. Some schools allow school shorts in hot terms only. Schools in Mombasa, Kilifi, Kisumu and other warm areas often prefer shorts all year. Check your school's uniform list before buying.

School shorts or sports shorts?

These school shorts are part of the formal uniform. For PE and games, choose our light, elastic-waist sports shorts instead.

Looking after school shorts

• Wash inside out in cool or warm water.
• Do not use bleach, which fades grey, navy and khaki.
• Hang to dry and iron on a medium setting through a damp cloth.
• Check pockets for pens and sweets before washing.

Fitting shorts properly

Shorts that fit well look much smarter in class photos and are more comfortable to wear all day. When your child tries them on, the waistband should sit at the natural waist with a belt, without needing to be pulled tight. The legs should end just above the knee — most Kenyan schools prefer this length — and there should be enough room in the seat for your child to sit on the floor during reading time or squat during games without the seams straining.

Because each size is sold individually, you can pick the size that matches your child's waist rather than guessing within a range. If your child is between two sizes, choose the larger one and use a belt; shorts that are slightly roomy will still fit after a growth spurt, while tight shorts quickly become uncomfortable.

How many pairs to buy

For a day scholar, two pairs is a sensible minimum, so one can be washed while the other is worn. If your child wears shorts every day of the week, three pairs gives more breathing room, especially in the rainy season when clothes take longer to dry. Many families also keep one pair of trousers for cold mornings and formal events, giving their child the right option for every day of the school year.
