How to tie a simple school tie knot

1. Drape the tie around the collar with the wide end about a hand-length longer than the narrow end.
2. Cross the wide end over the narrow end.
3. Bring the wide end up through the loop at the neck.
4. Pull it down through the front of the knot.
5. Tighten gently and slide the knot up to the collar.

Caring for a school tie

• Untie the knot each evening so the school tie keeps its shape.
• Spot-clean marks with a damp cloth and mild soap.
• Hand-wash in cool water only if needed, and dry flat.
• Press on a low iron setting through a cloth.

Getting the length and knot right

A tie that is too long or too short spoils an otherwise smart uniform. When tied, the tip should reach the top of the trouser waistband or the waist of a skirt. For younger children, a clip-on design solves the problem completely, because the length is fixed and there is no knot to learn. For older students, practise the simple knot above a few times at home before the first day, so that tying it in the morning rush becomes quick and easy.

Teach your child to loosen the knot rather than pulling the tie over their head at the end of the day. Pulling it off while still knotted stretches the fabric and spoils the shape. If the tie gets creased, hang it overnight and the creases usually drop out.

Ties for prefects and special roles

Many schools use a different design to mark prefects, house captains or senior students — for example a different stripe colour or a small embroidered emblem.
