Ours are classic black school shoes with a hard-wearing, slip-resistant sole and a padded insole for comfort through long school days. They polish to a smart shine and come in kids and adult sizes.

What to look for in school shoes

• A firm, stitched or well-bonded sole — the sole is what fails first on cheap school shoes.
• A slip-resistant tread for wet corridors and rainy seasons.
• A padded insole for children who walk long distances to school.
• A secure fastening — laces for older children, buckles or velcro for younger ones.
• Room to grow — about a thumb's width beyond the longest toe.

School shoes sizes

We stock school shoes for pre-primary, primary, junior and senior school students, plus adult sizes for teachers and staff. To find your child's size, stand them on a sheet of paper, mark the heel and longest toe, and measure the length in centimetres. Send us the measurement on WhatsApp with their usual shoe size and we will recommend the right pair. Feet often differ slightly, so measure both and use the longer one.

How long do school shoes last?

For an active child, one good pair of school shoes usually lasts a school year, sometimes longer. Children's feet grow quickly, so it is common to need a new size every 6 to 12 months for younger children. Rotating two pairs, and polishing regularly, makes school shoes last much longer.

Caring for school shoes

• Polish black school shoes once a week with a good black polish.
• Wipe off mud and dust daily with a damp cloth.
• Dry wet school shoes away from direct heat, stuffed with newspaper.
• Undo laces fully when taking shoes off to avoid crushing the heel.

Message us on WhatsApp or call, confirm the size and price, and pay by M-Pesa. We deliver within Nairobi in one to two working days and across Kenya by courier in two to four working days, or you can collect from our Nairobi shop.

Signs it is time for new shoes

Children rarely tell parents that their shoes are too small, so it helps to check every few weeks. Press your thumb at the front of the shoe while your child stands: if the longest toe is touching the end, the shoes are too small. Look for red marks on the feet after school, heels that are worn down on one side, soles that are separating at the front, or a child who suddenly walks differently. Any of these means it is time to measure again.

Shoes that fit properly protect growing feet, help children walk and run comfortably, and reduce blisters. Shoes that are much too big are also a problem: they slip at the heel, cause tripping and wear unevenly. The right size gives about a thumb's width of space beyond the toes and a snug fit around the heel.

Buying for the new school year

The start of the year in January is when most families buy new shoes, and it is also the busiest time for shoe shops. If you can, measure your child and ask us for the price and availability in December, so the shoes are ready before school opens. For schools and sponsorship programmes buying many pairs, a size list per child lets us pack each pair with the learner's name.
