Product details

Our school dress is the classic primary school dress worn across Kenya: an A-line cut with short sleeves, a crisp white collar and a back zip. It comes in blue-and-white and red-and-white gingham check, and in solid royal blue and green, in sizes 22 to 40, from KSh 650. The fabric keeps its colour after washing and the deep hem can be let down, so one school dress lasts longer as your daughter grows.

Features of our school dress

  • Crisp white collar that stays neat and contrasts with the check or solid colour.
  • A-line cut that gives room to move, sit and play comfortably.
  • Back zip so younger girls can dress easily with a little help.
  • Deep hem that can be let down as she grows.
  • Colour-fast fabric that keeps checks bright and whites white.
  • Short sleeves for comfort in warm weather; add a sweater on cold days.

School dress colours and patterns

Primary school dresses in Kenya often feature checkered patterns or solid colours. We stock the four most popular options:

  • Blue-and-white gingham check — the most widely used school dress pattern.
  • Red-and-white gingham check — popular with many public and private primary schools.
  • Royal blue — a solid colour often paired with a white collar and navy sweater.
  • Green — a solid colour used by many schools with green sweaters.

If your school uses a different check (for example green-and-white, yellow-and-white or purple-and-white) or a different solid colour, send us a photo on WhatsApp. For bulk orders we can usually match it.

Wearing the school dress with the rest of the uniform

A school dress is usually worn with a school sweater, school socks and black school shoes. Our plain school sweater comes in matching colours such as royal blue, forest green and maroon, and our school socks and school shoes complete the look.

Caring for a school dress

  • Wash in cool or warm water with similar colours.
  • Close the zip before washing so it does not snag.
  • Avoid bleach, which fades checks and solid colours.
  • Hang on a hanger to dry; smooth the collar by hand.
  • Iron on a medium setting, collar first.

Checking the fit when the dress arrives

Ask your daughter to try the dress on over a vest, with her school sweater on top if she will wear one. The collar should lie flat without pulling, the shoulder seams should sit at the edge of her shoulders, and she should be able to lift her arms and sit comfortably. The waist and chest should allow a little room for movement and growth. Finally, check the length with her shoes on: most schools want the hem just below the knee.

If the dress is slightly long, it is easy to turn up the hem and stitch it loosely, ready to let down next term. If the dress feels tight across the chest or under the arms, exchange it for the next size while it is still unworn and tagged. A dress that fits well is more comfortable, looks neater, and puts less strain on the zip and seams, so it lasts longer.
